As for what’s inside, perhaps owing to some of its unconventional production, this is indeed a rather unusual expression of Irish whiskey, even for a single malt. The nose is immediately a bit weedy, quite green and vegetal, but undercut with notes of savory spices — think rosemary, not cloves — and a slightly nutty, winey character. Give it some time, and the green character will fade a bit. This has its own niche in my palate, somewhere between Jameson and Glenmorangie Lasanta without the smoke. The Sexton is a new Irish single malt whiskey. It was conceived in Northern Ireland and is the brainchild of Master Blender Alex Thomas who is one of the few female whiskey blenders in the world today.In addition to writing, he also proofs, edits, designs, lays out and publishes all the articles in the online magazine. That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles exclusive single malts, grains and bourbons from renowned distilleries, and this release (with a limited run of just 420 bottles) is no exception. The liquid inside is as distinctive as the bottle branding, delivering bags of vanilla butterscotch, citrus, dried fruit and cinnamon.
