If you have other citrus fruit from the orange family, such as clementines, mandarins, or tangerines, the zest from any of these will be a very good substitute because the essential oils are pretty much the same. What is this? Does rolling an orange make it easier to peel? Other citrus fruits like lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, and clementine can easily replace orange in a dish. Use the peel from these fruits to create zest, and use it in the exact proportion as the original. Using these fruit peels are the closest you can get to the orange zest flavor. Can you zest with a cheese grater? becomes easier to peel if you gently press and roll it on the table before peeling. This loosens the skin fibers if you do it gently but firmly – do not pound, squeeze or squash – and it really works! Does rolling an orange make it juicier?

Orange zest is the colored outside portion of its peel. It brings a citrusy, tangy flavor to recipes. It’s great in salad dressings like our Citrus Salad Dressing, or baked goods like Orange & Fennel Cake. Is there a substitute for orange zest? If you don’t have a Microplane don’t worry! I am going to show you 2 other ways you can get a good orange zest. One uses a box grater and the other uses a vegetable peeler for when you are really in a bind. Take your vegetable peeler or paring knife and cut a strip of yellow skin off of the lemon. The peeler should easily grab just the zest, but you’ll need to be a little more precise with the knife. If needed, you can use a knife to scrape off any pith on the strip of lemon. Is grated orange peel the same as orange zest?It’s a great tool to have on hand since you can use it for zesting, finely grating hard cheeses like parmesan or Locatelli, or achieving a dusting of cinnamon or ginger. Firmly drag the orange down across the microplane, only grating the bright orange zest, leaving behind the bitter white pith. Orange and other citrus fruits have two layers of skin. The outermost orange layer is the orange zest and the white layer beneath it is the pith. Zest is the outermost part only, the colorful part. Whereas, the peel consists of both the colorful part and the white pith. People usually go with the zest instead of the peel to add fresh flavor to dishes. It’s sweet and bright. The best way I feel to zest an orange or any citrus fruit for that matter is using a Microplane! This is a great kitchen gadget that makes zesting any citrus fruit easy!

On the other hand, orange peel has quite a strong and bitter taste. Many people might say that it’s unpleasant. That being said, orange peel is used in some dishes that require quite a long time to cook. This can help break down and mellow the bitterness of the peel. Think of marmalade or a South Indian Karnataka style curry. Can You Buy Orange Zest? Remove the zest from the groove underneath the microplane. Once you’ve zested the entire orange, turn the microplane over, and use a knife to scrape the zest into a measuring spoon. To err on the side of caution, the smaller the zest, the less likely it is to interfere with the consistency of whatever you are creating. Opt for using a microplane, fine grater, or mincing strips of zest. For a Specific Recipe Avoid grating too forcefully. Doing so could cause the orange to get hung up on the grater, or cut too deeply down to the pith. The pith tends to have a bitter, unpleasant taste, so you want to avoid letting too much find its way into the dish you're preparing. Orange zest is usually found in the produce section or aisle of the grocery store or supermarket. How much zest do you get from one orange?

Box graters are great for zesting oranges. Box graters usually have 4 sides to them. You want the side with the smallest grating holes or you can also use the rough rasp side too. Both sides will give you a great orange zest. Change up the angle of your cuts every few seconds to make sure your zest comes out with a uniform consistency. Citrus zest stores well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks or in the freezer for three months! So feel free to keep these flavor-burst crystals handy to brighten any dish. Easy Substitutes For Orange Zest The best way to zest your orange is with a Microplane. They are easy to use and help you get just the orange off and not get into the white pith. Position the end of the grater on the cutting board. If you are using a flat grater, hold the grater at an angle, with one end resting against the cutting board. If you are using a box grater, simply place the grater on top of the cutting board. [1] X Research sourceExtracts are highly concentrated oils and are a powerful substitute for zests! As a guide, for each teaspoon of zest in a recipe, you can substitute ½ teaspoon of citrus extract. Try to avoid pulling the orange from the bottom of the zester to the top, which can clog the holes or damage the skin of the orange. Zesters are exclusively used for citrus fruits to get long, thin strips of zest. They’re small with just a few round holes that you scrape along the fruit. A grater, on the other hand, is multipurpose. You can zest citrus with a grater, but you can’t necessarily shred veggies with a zester. Is orange zest necessary? Other citrus zests are great substitutions for orange zest. Consider lemons, limes, mandarins, tangerines, grapefruits, etc. While the other tools I’ve mentioned are nice to have, if you own a paring knife, then you don’t really “need” anything else to get the job done. To be honest, this is excellent practice to hone your knife skills as well.

Freeze it until solid, then transfer the frozen zest to a freezer-safe container or a resealable plastic bag. You want to make sure you run it under cool water rubbing it gently to get off any chemicals or bacteria that might be on the peel from the farm or transport. Mince the strips into tiny pieces. Once you've julienned your orange peel into strips, turn them widthwise and cut them straight across. As you did with your first round of cuts, aim to make each piece as small as possible. You're basically doing the same thing a zester does, only by hand. Orange zest is an important ingredient to add brightness and lift to recipes. But don’t have any of the substitution ingredients above? You can omit orange zest without ruining your recipe…it just won’t taste quite as good. Can you use cuties for orange zest? Continue zesting the orange in continuous strokes from top to bottom around the entirety of the fruit until only the pith is left behind.
