About this deal

One of the most frustrating things about this watch is while it’s marketing includes surf-friendly capabilities, Garmin’s official surf app is only for iOS users. However, if you are an Android user like me, it’s still possible to convert the Garmin Fenix 6S into a surf watch. Navigation is one of the strong points for Garmin watches, and is one of the core features of the Fenix series. I unfortunately learned the hard way that when your Garmin Fenix 6S Pro says you are off course, you better listen to it. One of the big differences between the Garmin Fenix 6 over the Fenix 5 is power management, and this has been streamlined.

Across the board, these battery improvements are plentiful when compared to the Fenix 5 Plus. And - as mentioned earlier - these have largely been achieved via tweaks in the Fenix’s software which make management much more intuitive and allow users to better understand what kind of power they have remaining. This has been changed in a number of ways. Data from the Fenix 6S is uploaded to the Garmin Connect app, an all-in-one app that displays any relevant fitness and health data like: The most exciting features of the watch for The Salt Sirens readers is no doubt its ability for the sports watch to be converted into a surf and SUP watch. Running The Garmin Fenix 6 lineup faces stiff competition from other brands as well as from Garmin’s own lineup. Here are a few of our recommended Garmin Fenix 6 alternatives:Whilst the Fenix 6S is a true multisport watch (it records everything from open water swimming, triathlon and weights , to skiing and golf) there are a number of functions that make it a particularly perfect watch for runners. It includes the Advanced Running Dynamics feature which provides you with a plethora of running data alongside the usual pace, distance, elevation and mile/km splits. This is some of our favorite data, and a huge reason to invest in the Fenix 6. As runners, we’re addicted to the Training Effect and Training Status data, which is a great way to evaluate sessions. The Fenix 6S’s reduced case size does lead to one major difference over its bigger brothers – battery life. There is quite a large pay-off in terms of longevity from opting for the 42mm device. The differences in price vary greatly because of the sheer number of added extras available, each of which is targeted at different kinds of users. Design and display

The prices vary based on your choice of model, color, and strap, but generally speaking the base Fenix 6 is the cheapest with the 6S and 6X being a step up in terms of price. The most expensive is the Fenix 6X Pro Solar, which offers everything the 6X does plus solar charging and a lighter body. The Garmin Fenix 6 is lighter than its predecessor, but still has a robust build (Image credit: TechRadar)However, you don't get granular detail over the apps on your smartphone that are allowed to buzz your Fenix. The Garmin Fenix 6 introduces PacePro, an advanced race strategy feature which guides your speed based on your training and the route, invaluable to help you keep hitting those PB’s. The Fenix 6 series comes with the PulseOx feature as standard and now uses the weather app on your phone to give even more accurate VO2 max readings. Other benefits include an enhanced wrist heart rate sensor and built-in sports profiles for outdoor and wellness. The biggest design upgrade, however, can be seen on the display, which is now 17% larger, jumping from a 1.2-inch, 240 x 240 resolution display to a larger 1.3-inch, 260 x 260 offering. While that doesn’t sound like much, it does mean that fitness information is displayed in a much more intuitive way than before as it can now show extra (customizable) data fields.

The best for power saving is the maximum battery mode, which will turn off most of the Fenix 6’s most demanding features, such as the heart rate sensors, music, phone notifications and GPS.Data include pace, and distance time information. – but also lap data, cadence, heart rate, zones, and more. It’s a top-running experience, but no different from top-end Forerunners as we’ve already mentioned. If you want a bigger battery, Garmin says the Fenix 6X will last you 21 days in smartwatch mode, or 60 hours hours in GPS mode. Alright, this isn’t noticeably slimmer on the wrist but it does feel slightly lighter - weighing 7g less than the previous equivalent model. This is a welcome improvement for a smartwatch known for being rather cumbersome. In this guide, I’ll cover the pros and cons of the Garmin Fenix 6S, take you with me as I test it in different sports, and show you how to convert the Garmin Fenix 6S into a surf watch.
