What a deal of a shameless gall was required to put this product out. It's not as if it's that bad, either, everything's 'fine' by 'NR' standards; rather, what offends is its bloated unwieldiness, its smug dedication to gauche time-wasting. Like all these in-studio pop groups (ABC, Human League, Eurythmics, Soft Cell, Heaven 17), these songs aren't 'songs', but improv over a bed of synthesised sound. Some have more structure than others, see (hear) 'Relax', but by and large this is a symbol of the stagnant. Sheffield, Rob (1995). "Frankie Goes to Hollywood". Credits

CD2 also features previously-unheard studio demos of War, Two Tribes and Welcome to the Pleasuredome, an early, eleven minute version of Ballad of 32, and a completely unreleased song from the end of the Pleasuredome era, Watusi Love Juicy. While commercially successful, the album also drew criticism for containing new versions of all of the songs from the group's (already much-remixed) singles from the same year (" Relax" and " Two Tribes", plus B-side " War"), as well as a surfeit of cover versions in lieu of much new original material. It was later revealed that Trevor Horn's production dominated the record so thoroughly that the band's own instrumental performances were often replaced by session musicians or Horn himself. Frankie's second album, Liverpool, actively featured the full band. Love of fame, fear of disgrace, schemes for advancement, desire to make life comfortable and pleasant, and the urge to humiliate others are often the root of the valour men hold in such high esteem."

Recommendations

It should never have been a double, although that did give them the opportunity to make the 4 sides F, G, T and H, which is a nice touch. Simon Reynolds put it best when he said you can hear Trevor Horn losing interest over the length of the album. The first side is spectacular and is really worth the price of admission on its own. Bits of things float in and out before BANG off we go on a 13 minute prog kraut journey to Xanadu, oh yes, shooting stars never stop / even when they reach the top / here comes the supernova / what a pushover/ yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh (woo!). It was a single so you may know it from that but the original is far superior. IQ number one becomes Part Six in Zang Tuum Tumb's post-Bang Element Series, having previously appeared as number four in the fishy Action Series. “Ain't that peculiar?” Pennanen, Timo (2006).
