About this deal

I found the extremes both adversely affected the image—a setting of 2 pushed whites too much and caused colors to look unnatural, while -2 caused dark details to disappear. They can both be a bit fiddly to get right—the focus more so than the zoom, which has a tab on it that can be guided more easily with a finger. Once you get the focus right, image detail is appropriate for the 1080p resolution, and colors for movies and video are well within the range for realistic color in all but one of the predefined color modes. Setup is fairly simple, too: to help position the picture you'll use a bottom foot that’s used to adjust projection height and the manual zoom / focus dials along the top.

The ProjectorCentral Forums is a great place to chat with other projector enthusiasts about all things projectors. The TH685P is one step up from the TH585P, BenQ's least-expensive gaming and home entertainment projector.

It's more than enough for most situations, but still benefits from turning off extra lights if possible. Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more. The game is a fantastic homage to the X-wing games of the '90s while still being its own experience.

Cinema mode's more accurate color, combined with good contrast, made it the clear winner for watching most film and video. Maybe that Swiss Army knife has gotten you out of a few jams, but it lacks useful things like a hammer or a belt sander.Note, however, that the fan does output a fair amount of heat, especially if you’re unfortunate enough to be sitting right next to it. It adjusts gamma based on the ambient light and when on, there's a five-position slider to adjust it.

optical zoom is pretty expansive for such a cheap projector, making it easier to adapt it to different room sizes (which could be important if you want to take it around to friends’ houses for group game nights).

The BENQ TH685 original bulb inside includes a bulb from one of the OEM manufacturers (Osram P-VIP, Philips UHP, Ushio, Matsushita, Iwasaki HSCR) and has plastic housing from a generic manufacturer. Its potential is undoubtedly hamstrung a bit by the projector only carrying a mono 5W speaker system, but nonetheless this beamer actually sounds much better than expected, throwing its audio a good distance clear of its enclosure, keeping dialogue clear and convincing, and delivering on the promise of lots of subtle audio detailing.
