About this deal

A challenging subject in this one has been tackled with intelligence and sensitivity, making the book all the more realistic and, indeed, thought-provoking. In this review, meanwhile, we’re pleased to report that all that passion has been channeled into what is a gripping and at times brutal story. If I was them, I would have let myself get arrested, any half decent lawyer could have gotten the charges dropped.

Nicola is grieving for her partner, Susan, who was murdered a couple of weeks ear There has not actually been anything specific said between the broker and the undercover cop and they haven't committed any crimes when the undercover police officers reveal themselves. She’s been investigating a series of killings within the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities and is convinced that they are the work of contract killers paid for by family members who are unable to carry out the murders themselves. Although one plot thread towards the conclusion of the book was a little bit predictable, another was not, and completely threw me in the last few pages. A television series based on the Thorne novels was screened in Autumn 2010, starring David Morrissey as Tom Thorne and a BBC series based on the standalone thrillers IN THE DARK and TIME OF DEATH was shown in 2017.It is not fully straight forward, not written in stone that he will help, but there is one thing which puts him more in mind to help.

It appears that the Brits, in addition to avoidance of guns even in novels, are also very poor shots on the rare occasion they take aim. Billingham skilfully gets his distaste at the subject across to the reader through Thorne’s reactions, while still leaving them the scope to make their own minds up about what has occurred. Si l'intrigue est une agréable surprise, j'ai pourtant trouvé l'écriture moins inspirée que par le passé.Tanner is convinced that Susan’s death was a case of mistaken identity and that Tanner herself was the real target. Two teenagers go missing and the body of Amaya Shah is found and her boyfriend Kamal Azim is missing.

Thorne joins forces with Nicola Tanner (DIE OF SHAME - a recent standalone) to ferret out the ringleader and the hired killers. It could certainly be argued that interacting with Thorne has a kind of humanizing influence on her and we see a more relaxed Nicola Tanner start to emerge. here he is back doing what he does best solving crime and crime does not come more topical that Mark Billingham's Love like Blood. The book is dedicated to the memory of Banaz Mahmod and Rahmat Sulemani, and in his “Author’s Note” Billingham provides valuable information about honor-based violence in the UK, and the tragic true story of Banaz and Rahmat.

In Tom Thorne's 14th instalment we welcome back DI Nicola Tanner who first appeared in the standalone Die Of Shame. The pacing of the book is notably more measured than some of the previous efforts, and although, yes, there is a car chase towards the end, the action sequences are much more controlled than before. She won't leave the investigation alone though and drags Tom Thorne into her case; unofficially of course.

All readers can rely on Mark Billingham, he is one author who cares passionately about his characters. A few weeks back I had a good few hours to kill driving to Stirling and back to attend Bloody Scotland so I figured what the hell, bought the audio book (I’m slowly collecting the entire Tom Thorne back catalogue that way any how) and set it to play. She has been investigating a series of honour killings in the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities and she is convinced the murder of her partner is connected, but Tanner is pulled from the case, put on compassionate leave. Her family had all had cast-iron alibis which Thorne had been unable to break and her murder is still unsolved. LLB - and I have no clue what the title means even after having read the book - is another example of a novel (a weak pun) story line. Whatever the reason, for obvious reasons Tanner can’t investigate the murder herself and instead turns to Tom Thorne, a man who she has met only briefly and knows more by reputation, to help her find the answers she so desperately seeks. DI Nicola Tanner is on compassionate leave after the brutal murder of her partner, teacher Susan Best.
