About this deal

And you've probably heard that it's been re-issued and re-configured in so many different versions that Scott's originally-intended themes have been mucked with to the point of abstraction. I was hit once more with the ‘sliced bread’ metaphor, and it was only through viewing subsequent purchases that the realisation dawned that those first two DVDs were actually pretty naff.

As you get closer and closer to the practical models, you can see all of the little nooks and crannies with an appreciable amount of detail and depth. The complex optical composites of the film have also been given a major scrubbing and none of the matte lines and optical cut outs that were so prevalent in previous versions are present here. For the week that ended on January 27th, Warner Home Entertainment's Blade Runner 2049 kept its hold at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Up to that point, I'd only seen Harrison Ford flying around space, cracking whips while punching Nazis, and help some friendly Amish people raise a barn.Given the heady complicated stories and that it's been 25 years since that fateful evening, my first memories of both films are kind of a blur. It’s also been nearly five years since I last watched my favourite movie, and hopefully I’ll have lost enough familiarity with it to stay glued to the screen for the duration.

Even if the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 ends up being a subpar sequel, nothing can diminish my love and appreciation for this film. The Final Cut' is presented on all high-def versions with optional English and French Dolby Digital 5. For the week of September 4th, Warner Home Entertainment is bringing a welcome 4K upgrade of Ridley Scott's landmark sci-fi thriller Blade Runner. This is a richer, more expressive image that makes you appreciate the production design and aesthetics even more. Blacks were pretty good on the Blu-ray but they’re inky deep on the 4K, and the complexion of characters, especially Ford’s Deckard, has been enhanced, with stronger, better-defined skin tones, without ever appearing over-cooked. The film has always been well ahead of its time in sound design, but the Blu-ray production team has really gone above and beyond. This time however, I decided to put it aside for a while, let some other movies stun me into insensibility before I started seeing the seams in the technology. It also allows him to tweak some of the editing and effects that he was unable to complete to his satisfaction at the time of the film's original 1982 theatrical release. Although again I didn't despise the earlier DVD editions, this restoration is nothing short of a revelation.

Fittingly enough, a shot of the THX sign towards the end of the film looks electric blue in 4K and is relatively dull and faded in HD. Similarly, as Deckard performs his question test on Rachael, her voice actually appears to be coming from the upper right quadrant of your screen - exactly where it’s supposed to.

The film's many shots of the future cityscape of Los Angeles, complete with fire-spewing smoke stacks and enough smog to choke a two pack a day smoker, definitely set an intense mood for the film.
