About this deal

As one obvious example, since the lens doesn’t have vibration reduction, I’m hesitant to recommend it for Nikon Z DX users whose cameras lack in-body image stabilization (like the Nikon Z30, Z50, and Zfc). In my opinion, the Z out classes the F model at every focal length, but especially at the longest and the widest lengths. With a mostly plastic construction, the Z 24-120mm f/4 S feels fairly solid in your hand, and it commendably has a metal mount.

This isn’t one from that pack but, since it’s also 77mm, you have the option of using many filters from your F-mount lenses. What does make a difference is the 71-120mm focal lengths and a closer focusing distance for close up work.

Because with the Z 24-120mm f/4 S, Nikon has made one of the best all-around midrange zooms that I’ve ever tested. The Nikon Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S provides excellent optical performance for detailed images with defocused backgrounds and focused close-ups for macros.

On the longer zooms ( in my case the 100-400, and the 70-200 Zs), the zoom rings are closest to the front element, while on the the shorter Zooms (24-70S f2. The zoom design offers a little more telephoto compression than the Canon RF 24-105mm F4 or Sony FE 24-105mm F4 sold for competing systems. The Z 24-200mm lacks the dedicated focus ring so the multi-function ring also controls focus when the camera is set to MF. While I am very impressed with the image quality of the 24-70 f/4 S, even now I can see where I would rather have the reach of the 24-120 f/4 S lens. Focus transitions were free of false purple and greens (Longitudinal CA) and tree branches and power lines avoided purple fringing (Lateral CA). Of course, as you’d expect from a Nikon Z lens, it features an impressive overall build that exudes quality.
