About this deal

At the back of the rulebook, there is a solo campaign which has a number of different scenarios each with a variable setup. For being just colors and numbers, it’s got such a clever system that feels good when you “combo out” during a production phase. We accidentally memed on this game because I couldn’t remember the word “financier”, and now I laugh every time I play it. A few important quirks here and there add some more decisions, like exchanging 5 resources for a wild red resource, or gaining a bonus for producing the most of one of the resource types, rounding out an incredibly confident and satisfying package. The game comes with a 2 piece board, a round tracker, resource cubes, character tokens and 150 cards.

Those in your constructed are considered “Under Construction” and the recycled ones are discarded and you collect the Recycling bonus resource cube. With the war mechanic as well as the neighbour resource trading, you are definitely more invested in what at least some of the table is doing in a game of 7 Wonders. The last resource is Krystallium and this can only be produced as a bonus to building something or by trading in five resources on your empire card. During the draft phase, you pick a card from your hand and place it face down on your play area in front of you before passing the cards in the direction of the arrow. I also try and recycle enough to get a building up before production on the first round, especially if it produces materials. Some players will put a lot of work into generating resources without realizing they must be used the turn they’re acquired (except Krystallium).

They have different backs and each hand has some of each so you will always have some to choose from. Some give you a base number of VPs, and some give you, for example, 2 VP for each black building you have. It teases your desire, always prompting the impression you wanted to do more; tempting you that a new game is just a few minutes away.

The bonus is either placed on a card under construction if a matching space is available or, if not, is placed on the player’s empire card. Points are available on some cards, some which give you points outright and others that are a multiplier effect on certain card colours. It’s a Wonderful World is no exception; although there each card has ‘just’ two options (plan to build or recycle), that help each other and make sure no card is wasted. Similarly, indexing on Fight Lady or Money Man seems to be workable if you can grab the right cards and multipliers. The more you build, though, the more you’ll earn as you move through production steps to gain additional resources.

And, if like me, games (and everything else, really) make you think of songs, this one has an obvious choice right off the bat. The cards are interesting and are balanced between their difficulty to build and the reward you get for that effort. The first box really sets the tone and once you open the next box, you know something is going to change. At the same time, you will have to balance when to complete production cards versus scoring opportunities—too few production cards and you may not have enough resources to complete your cards, but too many and you may not have enough points to win. Once everyone has chosen their card, they are simultaneously revealed and then you draft your next card and repeat until you have seven cards each.I am a fan of card drafting and engine building, and this game does both of these very well in a very short amount of time. If a card has been assigned all its required resources, it is completed and moved to the Constructed Cards Area. I’d be interested to see what winning tableaus look like; I think there will be some differences between them all.
