About this deal

have we really raised a generation that cannot face life without a haze of some substance that takes the edge off of everything in life? Maggie and Iris have a strained relationship, mostly in part due to Iris’ lack of acceptance of Maggie as gay.

She has a right to be mad at her mother, but her lack of empathy, self-awareness, and consideration are on full display. That said, after she finds the letters, Maggie realizes perhaps she knew far less about her parents’ relationship than she thought.

the writing does a great job of portraying emotions and grief, and the progressions of those things as the story goes on. Masad’s impressive novel delves into varieties of that strange magic, love, and of its expansive, life-shaping possibilities.

I'm a liberal Obama loving old millennial/young Gen X-er, and I can affirm we are not a monolith that thinks with a hive mind.Along the way, she discovers a side of her mother she never knew existed, secrets she (and in some instances, Maggie’s father) kept, and she starts to understand things her mother did and said which never had context before. Instead, she hits the road to hand-deliver these mysterious letters and learn more about her mother in the process. A unique meditation on the universality and particularity of family ties and grief, and a tender and biting portrait of sex, gender, and identity, A ll My Mother's Lovers challenges us to question the nature of fulfilling relationships. They hadn’t been particularly close in years, as Maggie felt Iris never accepted her sexuality, always seeming to insinuate it was some sort of phase. She decides, to run from her family, grief, and Shiva duties to personally deliver the letters to the men.

Extending the full scope of human experience to older characters, to queer characters, still feels revolutionary in 2020, and Masad is diligent about sharing those stories and those voices with dignity and care. I need a book to show me how a character is, through their actions, not just tell me repeatedly without ever actually showing an example of the claimed behaviour or personality trait. A story of good but difficult characters and the openhearted people who love them, All My Mother’s Lovers is a compassionate and insightful work. The ensuing road trip takes her over miles of California highways, through strangers' recollections of a second, hidden life (that seems almost impossible to reconcile with the Iris she knew), and a journey through her own fears as she navigates her new relationship. The ensuing road trip takes her over miles of California highways, through strangers’ recollections of a second, hidden life (that seems almost impossible to reconcile with the Iris she knew), and a journey through her own fears as she navigates her new relationship. The book's present-day storyline takes place in 2017, and it was super fascinating to look at a year that seems so recent with an almost historical lens to it. As she fills in the details of Iris's story, Maggie must confront the possibility that almost everything she knew about her mother -- her marriage, her lukewarm relationship to Judaism, her disapproval of her daughter's queerness -- is more meaningful than she ever allowed herself to imagine. Maggie makes the decision to deliver them in person and find out what these men meant to her mother.
