About this deal

I've also read a pretty awesome comic from him about his parents, and this seemed like the prototype for that, and was also a sweet, sad, exceedingly British story in its own right. The characters anchor this story, and it's well worth reading "Gentleman Jim" to get acquainted with them. At the point Raymond Briggs produced Gentleman Jim he was combining careers as an illustrator of children’s books, occasionally his own, with lecturing at Brighton School of Art. With this playful style, Briggs expertly transforms common feelings of inadequacy into an endearing and enjoyable experience that speaks across generations, concluding with an optimistic implication that even a misfortunate outcome can be better than no change at all. We will never knowingly harvest your data beyond the cookies needed for smooth running of the site, and wouldn't dream of passing it anywhere.

Gentleman Jim is the story of Jim Bloggs, a lavatory attendant who, dissatisfied with his station in life, devotes his time to envisioning a world beyond it. Interesting introduction about whether Raymond Briggs was passed over as the first "graphic novel" creator.

Now, I admit, it is a little sad towards the end and I can honestly say I've never felt truely sorry for a character in a book, apart from Jim. Jim sets out to bring these dreams to fruition by accumulating various accoutrements, only to discover that the life of an executive, an artist, or a cowboy is more complicated and costly than it appears. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Encouraged by his wife, Hilda, also eager to incorporate more adventure into her life, Jim sets out to bring these dreams to fruition by accumulating various accoutrements, only to discover that the life of an executive, an artist or a cowboy is more complicated and costly than it appears.

Deciding that he wants to better himself he attempts to get started on various career changes until he fixes upon Highwayman (but only to take from the rich and give to the poor). The story is funny and uplifting, with beautiful, delicate illustrations - a charming story for dreamers. We have followed his grand ideas and unfortunate attempts to break out, and we also see his consternation as he tries to do the right thing. Our hapless hero finds out that life isn't quite that simple, when he cobbles together a Highwayman outfit and sets off on a series of comic misadventures. Some full pages are quite beautiful, especially those where Jim fantasises about becoming an artist, or is avidly reading aloud the purple prose of his romantic adventure stories. Not paginated [30pp] Illustrated throughout in colour comic type illustrations by Briggs A story about a toilet cleaner who tries to better himself and ends up in prison. His walls are lined with books like Out in the Silver West, the Boys' Book of Pirates and Executive Opportunities, which provide fodder for his ruminations on career change. in its view of how easily destructive the world can be for those naive fools who complacently follow along, ignorant of the dystopian nature of their lives. When he discovers he can't afford the plane tickets from England to Texas, he decides to become a Robin Hood type character instead. Gentleman Jim tells the story of a council toilet attendant who just can't seem to get ahead and dreams of a better life.

But the authority figures look like cruel, vicious robots, and all largely the same as one another; utterly impersonal.Considering what he along with Hilda would endure two years later makes this an interlude to tragedy. He knows it must be something to do with Education, but sorrowfully observes that “all we got was a Bible and a thick ear”. We are delighted to bring it back into print as the first book in an occasional series, Cape Graphic Classics. Raymond Briggs adopts a far wider palette of pastel colours whenever Jim dreams, perfectly illustrating his great ambitions and wild fantasies. Raymond Briggs (Engeland, 1934-2022) tekende deze kleine 32 bladzijden tellende beeldnovelle uit 1980 met kleurpotlood, wat een heel mooi zacht effect geeft en de melancholische ondertoon nog eens onderstreept.
