About this deal

Weighing just 8.5 kg, this lawn aerator is one of the lightest on the market. It also runs slightly more quietly than other electric machines on this list (though only just), producing 98 dB. Finally, there are spiked aerator shoes. These are definitely the best option for those who are looking to up their step count! They’re worn on your feet and will aerate your lawn as you walk around. They could also be worn whilst doing other jobs, like hanging out the washing. There are different types of lawn aerator available, which can produce different results. Below, you will find information about how and when to use an aerator, as well as how to choose the best aerator for your garden. Benefits of Aerating the Lawn

I include this multi-functional model in my Best Aerator review because if you have a great deal of lawn thatch on your grass (especially in spring), you need to remove this barrier before you aerate your lawn. I do have a separate review for scarifiers but you may prefer the convenience of this all-in-one machine as it also comes with a second attachment for aerating the lawn. The hollow tines are long, removing plugs of soil to a depth of 13 cm, and reasonably wide at 1.6 cm across. The holes they create allow water, oxygen and fertiliser to get deep into the soil and improve the health of your lawn. Roller spike aerators are the most popular type of lawn aerator. Many are simply pushed across the lawn. As the roller rotates, the spikes are pushed into the ground. Spiked lawn aerators are either manual or electric. Some assembly is required before you begin using this aerator. However, it’s still easy to assemble – there are only a few parts to put together, and the included instructions are easy to understand. There are anti-slip pads on the part of the shoe that connects to the sole of your own shoes, helping to prevent slipping.

For some reason, BMC decided to make the handle in a broom style instead of a T-shaped handle and I didn’t like this. It actually didn’t make the aerator hard to push forward, but I just think a T-shaped handle would have been a better choice for applying downward pressure. At 4 feet the handle is long enough so that you don’t have to stoop down too much while using the tool. The handle on the Einhell RG-SA lawn aerator is both height adjustable and foldable, so getting a comfortable working position isn’t too hard, and the folding helps to make storage much easier. Aerating the lawn can be beneficial in several ways. The effects can also vary depending on what type of lawn aerator you are using. There isn’t much to talk about design wise with these lawn aerators. They consist of a solid plastic sole, 5 straps to hold them on your feet, and 13 nails on each foot to do the aerating. They arrive in pieces and need to be assembled but it’s a very simple task, especially if you use a decent spanner instead of the useless one that is supplied by Abreome. This lawn aerator has a 1500 W motor, five adjustable heights and a 10 m power cable. It’s designed to revitalise lawns, with the 20 hardened steel blades able to remove moss, lawn thatch and dead grass. The 36 cm working width will work efficiently across a large lawn.As it is easy to guess from its name, this tool doubles as a lawn aerator and a scarifier thanks to the two interchangeable attachments that come in the box. The 16-tine scarifying roller not only allows you to remove thatch and moss from your lawn but also helps better air and water penetration by making deep holes in the soil. The aerating roller, in turn, comes equipped with 20 spikes that help clean the lawn from leaves, moss, and other debris. The debris is neatly collected into a 40-litre bag for further disposal. It’s worth noting that this aerator isn’t ‘hollow-tined’. The 8 cm spikes don’t remove any earth, so the ground isn’t any less compact. However, it’s still very effective. The spikes are 6 mm wide and create holes that allow air, water and nutrients to get deeper into the soil. This type of aerator has an additional benefit over hollow tine models – there’s no need to remove plugs of soil from the tines after use. Instead, simply insert the spikes into the soil and remove. There are a few with this design, it’s not my favourite for the manual lawn aerators though, I much prefer the spike shoes and they really penetrate the ground plus I get some exercise 😀 Aerator spike shoes The Greenkey Rolling Lawn Aerator is the model to invest in if you’re looking for something a little better than a basic model. The length of the spikes is just about the right length at 5cm, and it is wide enough to let in air and water effectively without messing up the aesthetic appeal of your lawn. I have noticed that where my lawn used to puddle in heavy rain, it no longer does this now after aerating the lawn.

One that’s pretty sensible is the BMC Lawn Aerator: BMC Lawn Aerator– worth a look if you’re interested in a spike roller Designed primarily for medium size areas, this VonHaus 2 in 1 Electric Lawn Scarifier and Aerator is a great budget option if you’re after an electric machine. It’s particularly useful as a scarifier, although the aerator works well in certain contexts. There are two methods of aerating, and depending on the condition of your soil, you’ll want either a hollow plug aerator or a spiked aerator. If your soil is very compacted, use a plug aerator . By removing plugs of soil from the ground, these aerators can dramatically improve drainage and create long-lasting aeration. Aeration means to poke deep, thin holes in your lawn to improve soil oxygen levels. Scarification on the other hand means to remove debris from your lawn, such as dead leaves and thatch. However, this spike aerator still takes a bit of effort to push. It’s still best to use it when the lawn is slightly wet.

Plug aerators have hollow tines and are usually pushed into the ground using your feet. The hollow tines remove plugs of earth as opposed to just penetrating the soil. These are more effort to use, although they have the benefit of actively removing the soil as opposed to just pushing it to the side. If you have a ride-on lawn mower, there is always the option of purchasing an aerator that is attached to your ride-on lawn mower and pulled along behind. Weights can be added for increased soil penetration. The 27-pound, ETL-approved de-thatcher features a single-handle, five-position depth control, from less than half an inch below the soil to just under half an inch above. This way you can be sure you set the machine to remove what you want removed and not an entire swath of sod. The scarifying blade is pre-attached, but you also can swap out a rake attachment (included, but you need an adjustable wrench). The handles require minimal assembly, with included hardware. In smaller gardens, you can use hand-tool plug aerators to save money . These are relatively slow to use, but work well on small patches of lawn. You might even consider spiked shoes so you can walk around the garden whilst aerating the soil. Although a fair amount of manual work is required to use this lawn aerator, it allows you to be very precise, ensuring you don’t poke too many or too few holes. It also has a foot bar, making it relatively easy to push the aerator deep into the soil. One of the best things about this aerator is how durable it is. The tines are easily replaceable if needed, and the body of the aerator is extremely solid. There’s a small area where you can place your foot so your weight will sink the tines into the soil. Rather than coming with nails attached to multiple bars, this spike aerator comes with five star-shaped spikes along a single horizontal bar. If using a hollow tine or plug lawn aerator, you will have a number of soil plugs left over on your grass when you’re done. There are 13 metal spikes on each shoe, approximately 5 cm long, which penetrate into all types of soil for efficient aerating. These spikes are also replaceable, just in case any get lost.
